Demote
Effective Date: October 5, 2026
Made with Best Practice LLC ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Demote mobile application (the "App"), a universal remote for controlling TVs and streaming players on your own Wi-Fi network. This policy explains what information the App handles and how we use it. Demote does not require an account or sign-in to use.
Demote is designed to work without collecting personal information about you. We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not require your name or email address to use the App.
To control your TV, Demote discovers and communicates with devices on your local Wi-Fi network. This communication happens directly between your phone or tablet and your TV or streaming player. We do not receive the contents of that activity.
The TVs you pair, their pairing keys, your buttons and your settings are stored on your device. On iPhone and iPad, the widgets, Lock Screen and Control Center buttons use storage shared only between Demote and its widgets, on the same device. None of it is sent to us.
When you choose a photo or video to show on your TV, Demote reads only the item you pick and serves it from your phone or tablet straight to the TV over your local network. It is not uploaded to us or to any server.
If you choose a photo to sit behind the remote's buttons, Demote keeps resized copies of it on your device only. It is never uploaded, and it is never included when you copy buttons to another TV.
Home Assistant support is optional and off until you turn it on. Demote then talks directly to your own Home Assistant server, at the address you choose, and signs in through Home Assistant's own sign-in page or with a token you paste. The sign-in is stored in your device's secure storage (Keychain or Android Keystore). It is not sent to us, and there is no Demote server in between.
When you browse button packs, Demote downloads the public list of packs, and any pack you turn on, from our directory on GitHub. GitHub may log ordinary request information, such as your IP address, under GitHub's privacy statement. A pack's buttons, and any web request button you create, send requests only to the addresses shown before you turn the pack on, or the address you typed, and only when you tap them or run them in a macro. Most go to devices on your home network. Some, such as IFTTT webhooks, go to an internet service you choose, under that service's own policy. Addresses, keys and passwords you enter are kept in your device's secure storage and are never copied with your buttons.
The game controller sends your presses to the destination you choose, and nowhere else:
Demote itself collects none. It contains no analytics SDK, no crash-reporting SDK, no advertising SDK, and no advertising identifier, and we do not measure how you use the app. The Google Cast SDK, which Demote uses to control Chromecast and Google TV devices, may send Google an anonymous device identifier and basic diagnostic and usage information about Cast sessions, under Google's privacy policy. It is not linked to you or used for tracking, and we do not receive it. Earlier versions used Google Firebase (Analytics and Crashlytics); both were removed, and this policy describes the current release.
Demote requests device permissions only when a feature needs them:
Each of these is optional except Local Network, and the App asks for them only at the moment the matching feature is used. You can change them at any time in your device settings.
Demote offers a one-time "Lifetime Unlock – All Features" in-app purchase. Purchases are processed through the App Store or Google Play and managed with RevenueCat, which we use to verify entitlements and restore purchases across your devices.
These providers may receive purchase identifiers, product identifiers, and device/store metadata needed to operate app-store billing. We do not receive your full payment card number. Demote does not use ads or advertising identifiers.
We rely on a small number of third-party services to operate the App. These providers have access only to the limited information needed to perform their function and are obligated not to use it for other purposes:
We retain purchase information only as long as necessary for the purposes described here, or as required to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Purchase and entitlement records may be retained by app-store and purchase providers as needed for account, tax, fraud-prevention, and compliance purposes.
The security of your data is important to us, but no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Demote is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Effective Date" above.
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete information we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To make a request, contact us using the details below.
